It’s amazing to me how patterns can be transformed by using different fabrics. I previously made McCall 4769 into a summery, airy shirtdress using a white swiss dot. I absolutely loved the pattern and it is no wonder to me that it has great reviews on PR. So I set out to make a second version for fall using View E with 3/4 sleeves.
I used Kaufman interweave Chambray in Slate (purchased from Fabric.com during a recent sale). The fabric is a little stiffer than I had hoped but I actually like the stiffness in the skirt portion – it gives more body to the garment. However, it does cause more wrinkles in the bodice. Oh well, it’s comfortable nonetheless.
As I was constructing the dress I was really nervous it was going to turn out too black. My boyfriend’s favorite colors are black, white, and any shade of gray in between, so he didn’t seem to see the problem :) But I knew it needed a pop of color. After debating either using red thread for the buttonholes or just using red buttons, I went with the latter.
I bought enough buttons to put some on the sleeve cuffs but I’m still undecided. It could add some more color but also may look a bit tacky. Thoughts? Opinions? On another note, I really like these cuffs – they’re so cute!
